Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series
The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."
Injury History
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
